I
am an
ecologist and botanist employed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation,
Division of Natural Heritage. My professional work involves field inventory and
documentation of the ecological communities and flora of the state's most significant
natural areas. In my free time, I enjoy exploring
the colors, patterns, and small details of nature with a camera.
Part of my training in photography came in an earlier career, when I worked for one of
Washington, D.C.'s well-known architectural firms. There, I learned to use large-format
cameras and had photographs of buildings and interiors published in Architecture,
Progressive Architecture, Architectural Record, and several books. My
natural history images have been displayed in a number of corporate, airport and health
care settings in the eastern United States. Some of them have also been published in
regional magazines, conservation publications, and scientific books.
The
photographs in this collection were all taken in Virginia and other states in the
mid-Atlantic region, using 35mm or digital SLR equipment. Until recently I used a
Nikon film camera system, scanning color transparencies and optimizing the scans
in Adobe Photoshop. I first started shooting with digital cameras in 2003 and now
primarily use digital capture for both my personal and professional work.
